Climate change
Anasina GRAY-BARBERIO (Northern Metropolitan) (09:42): The worst irony of the climate change crisis that is unfolding all around the world is that it is wreaking havoc on communities who have done the least to contribute to it. Right here in Victoria communities are already seeing their lives change forever due to more intense bushfires, killer heatwaves and floods, which will be exacerbated by the state government rolling out the red carpet for AI data centres. We have seen the recent devastating floods in Nepal rip communities apart. A new United Nations report has found we will not be meeting the Paris climate targets of 1.5 degrees. It means something to parents like me who want a safer climate future for their kids. It means something to the Greens, who are the only ones pushing these corporate major parties to take stronger climate action. Meanwhile this arrogant Labor Prime Minister goes to the Pacific Islands, where people are facing losing their islands to rising sea levels, and lies, saying Australia is highly regarded when it comes to climate change. Well, guess what, good neighbours should not drown their neighbours. Labor has approved 30 new coal and gas projects since 2022. They even approved a new coalmine in Queensland at the same time as the Pacific forum. Do you know what is galling about this Prime Minister and what you get with Labor governments? It is the audacity to lecture us about climate action while they continue to bend to the fossil fuel industry.
