Aiv PUGLIELLI (North-Eastern Metropolitan) (12:49): (2600) My question today is to the Minister for Multicultural Affairs. There is a growing Burmese diaspora community in my electorate. The Centre for Multicultural Youth has undertaken consultation and found that young people from the Burmese diaspora are experiencing high levels of racism in schools, that there are high rates of disengagement and that there have been significant escalations of violence towards young people of this background. The Centre for Multicultural Youth would like to build on the experience and success of their Le Mana Pasifika and Jamma community support groups to develop a project to support young people from the Burmese community in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Activities would focus on strengthening cultural identity and community support to reduce criminal behaviour, break cycles of recidivism and strengthen family and community resilience. Minister, will you provide funding to the Centre for Multicultural Youth to develop locally accessible and culturally safe programs to help young people from the Burmese diaspora in the eastern suburbs stay connected, build confidence and take part in safe, positive activities in their communities?
