Evan MULHOLLAND (Northern Metropolitan) (12:56): (2607) My constituency question is for the Minister for Casino, Gaming and Liquor Regulation regarding the underlying cause of firebombings in our electorate in Richmond and Glenroy. Last week the Premier rejected calls to cut tobacco excise and to increase enforcement powers to tackle organised crime, suggesting that this policy is reckless and will drive up smoking rates and that they side with public health. However, as minister you said of the federal tobacco excise last year:
It’s clearly led to the creation of this illegal market.
You went on to say that we need a national approach to tackle the problem and argued the underlying cause is the price of legal tobacco being driven by federal excise policies. Minister, this is something the Premier now rejects. Who is right, you or the Premier?
