Constituency questions

Northern Victoria Region

Gaelle BROAD

Northern Victoria Region

Gaelle BROAD (Northern Victoria) (12:50): (2602) My question is for the Minister for Corrections. Minister, the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre has been the subject of significant investment, including millions of dollars spent on upgrading and maintaining the facility before it was closed in December 2023. Yet the facility was reopened in April this year, and I have been advised that there may be around 60 staff employed to oversee just a handful of people in custody. I have previously raised concerns in Parliament about the impact of its closure on the local community and the need for greater transparency around the future of the site. According to ABC reports, an initial 30 beds and 114 staff were planned to be recruited, with the operation of the centre to cost $141 million over five years. I would appreciate an update from the minister. How much has the Victorian government spent on the Malmsbury youth justice precinct and its ongoing staffing and operating costs since its closure? How many staff are currently employed there? How many contractors have been engaged? And how many young people are currently in detention at the facility?
