Katherine COPSEY (Southern Metropolitan) (12:46): (2597) My question is to the Minister for Artificial Intelligence and the Digital Economy. A constituent from my electorate has contacted me deeply concerned by the construction of a new $2 billion hyperscale data centre in Port Melbourne and the rapid expansion of similar facilities across our state. They note the complete lack of meaningful public consultation around these data centres and the overwhelming impact they will have on local communities, including enormous water and energy consumption, pollution, noise and pressure on local infrastructure. They are also concerned about the broader impacts of artificial intelligence on jobs and the need for stronger safeguards to ensure communities and the environment are protected. Minister, will the government pause new AI data centre approvals and developments until we have strong safeguards for Victoria’s water, jobs and environment?
