Kensington Road–Epsom Road, Kensington
Sheena WATT (Northern Metropolitan) (09:46): I rise to recognise the outstanding advocacy of the Kensington community, whose tireless efforts have delivered a major victory for local road safety. Residents have rightly voiced their deep frustration over heavy toll-dodging truck rat-running happening through the residential streets of Kensington. These massive vehicles simply do not belong on local roads where our kids walk to school and families live. They cause unacceptable noise, they rattle homes and they pose a severe safety risk to pedestrians and cyclists. Our Labor government has listened to the community. We are officially implementing a 24/7 long-vehicle turning ban at the intersection of Kensington Road and Epsom Road. Trucks longer than 17 metres are now banned from turning in and out between Kensington Road and Epsom Road. This measure will help return Kensington streets to the local community. This outcome would not have been possible without strong local voices. In particular, I want to thank and acknowledge local councillor and Labor candidate for Melbourne Davydd Griffiths for his work. Davydd is a dedicated, hardworking and passionate advocate for Kensington who always fights hard on local issues. This result is because of a community that cares deeply about its neighbourhood and a candidate who cares too. We will continue working to keep our streets safe for many generations to come.
